Embracing the Journey: My Adventure as a Muse Hunter

Updated: Jan 19

Navigating New Territories

I know how to track inspiration in a rehearsal room. I can sense the scent of a good idea on a blank page. For years, I have guided students, artists, and professionals through the thickets of their own creative blocks. I know how to get people un-stuck. That part of the map is worn by my footprints.

But for the last three weeks, I haven't been in my familiar woods. Instead, I’ve been bushwhacking through a completely new jungle: the backend of website design, digital marketing, and SEO.

And I have to tell you: The Wix dashboard does not care about my resume. It is an unforgiving landscape. Every day, I show up to the screen, and every day, I am humbled by a button that won't do what I want it to do.

Facing the Internal Critic

A few years ago, this kind of friction would have shut me down. The Internal Critic would have had a field day: "You’re too old for this. You’re not technical. Stick to what you know."

But this time, something is different. And that difference is my practice.

The Power of Daily Practice

I am calling myself a Muse Hunter because I believe inspiration isn't something you wait for; it's something you develop the stamina to track. What I’m realizing is that my daily creative practice—my Morning Pages, my 15 minutes of useless play, my commitment to showing up even when I have nothing to say—wasn't just training me to make art.

It was training me to be resilient.

It is precisely the dexterity of my creative practice that allows me to handle the rigidity of the tech. Because I have a container where I am allowed to be messy every single morning, I have the fortitude to be clumsy in the afternoon while learning a new piece of software.

Agility in the Hunt

The hunt requires agility. The terrain changes. The tools change. Sometimes the tools are a script and actors; sometimes they are HTML blocks and hex codes.

If you want to stay on the trail, you have to stay on your toes. You have to be willing to look foolish in service of building something new.

Embracing the Digital Wilderness

So, I’m still here. I’m still tracking. The wilderness looks a little different right now—a lot more pixels, a little less jazz hands—but the instinct remains the same.

I’ve learned to embrace the discomfort. Each challenge is an opportunity to grow. Each misstep is a lesson in resilience. I remind myself that creativity is not just about the end product; it’s about the journey.

Finding Joy in the Process

As I navigate this new terrain, I find joy in the process. I celebrate small victories, like finally understanding how to align a text box or successfully embedding a video. These moments of triumph fuel my passion and remind me why I embarked on this journey in the first place.

I have also discovered that the more I engage with this digital landscape, the more I uncover my authentic voice. The tools may be different, but the essence of creativity remains unchanged.

The Importance of Community

In this journey, I’ve also leaned on my community. Sharing my struggles and triumphs with fellow creatives has been invaluable. We support each other, share tips, and remind one another that we’re not alone in this wild adventure.

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, I encourage you to reach out. Connecting with others can provide the encouragement you need to keep moving forward.

Conclusion: Onward and Upward

As I continue to explore this new frontier, I invite you to join me. Let’s embrace the messiness of creativity together. Let’s celebrate our resilience and the unique paths we are carving out.

Remember, the hunt for inspiration is ongoing. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress. So, let’s keep tracking our muses and forging ahead, no matter how challenging the terrain may be.

Onward.
